Our 2002 trip to see the Equator.

Our Itinerary

2 October 2002 Arrive in Quito, the capital of Ecuador.  We flew in from Washington, DC on a Continental Airlines flight through Houston.
3 October Visited Quito's old city
4 October Went to Cotopaxi volcano about 60 miles from Quito where we drove/climbed to over 15,400 ft.  What an experience!
                 We ate lunch at Hacienda San Agustin.
5 October  By bus to Riobamba where we intend to ride the train
6 October On the train's rooftop to see the Nariz del Diablo (Devil's Nose).  What a spectacular and butt wrenching train journey!
                 After leaving the train we took a bus onward to Cuenca
7 October All day in Cuenca 
8 October All day in Cuenca
9 October An early morning flight back to Quito.  We spent the remainder of the day in Quito.
10 October Today we stood on Mitad del Mundo (the middle of the world).  In both North and South at the same time.  In the
                  afternoon  we went to the Guyasamin museum.
11 October Bus to Otavalo.  Walked to the Peguche waterfalls and had lunch at Hacienda Pennasqui.  Visited Cotacachi.
12 October Otavalo market.  Took a taxi to lake Cuicocha (Guinea pig) and took a boat ride around the lakes in the middle of the
                   volcanic caldera.  Had lunch high above the lake where Don experienced Guinea pig.
13 October Visited the villages of Agato and Peguche.  Bought ourselves a beautiful weaving from Jose C, after have looked at the work
                    of other very talented weavers. Ate lunch at Hacienda Cusin.  Bus back to Quito.
14 October Left Quito to return home
